Wimbledon champions 2011: Petra Kvitova and Novak Djokovic

Petra Kvitova: New female Wimbledon champion 2011

The 21 year old Kvitova of Czech republic displayed highly impressive play in the Wimbledon Women’s Singles final where she defeated the famous female tennis player Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4. This was Kvitova’s first career Grand Slam. Kvitova with her absolutely stunning and powerful ground strokes was able to push Sharapova back. For Maria Sharapova, it was her second appearance in the Wimbledon final after claiming the 2044 Wimbledon title. However since then she had a major problem with her serve which haunted her again in the final of Wimbledon 2011 where she serves back-to-back double faults in the sixth game. Kvitova on the other hand dominated the first set with her powerful serve. The most impressive thing about Kvitova’s game was her returning, both backhand and forehand.

So we have a new female champion of Wimbledon who made her way through mighty names like Serena, Venus and Wozniacki.

Noval Djokovic, Wimbledon Champion 2011

No one thought of famous tennis player Novak Djokovic winning the Wimbledon 2011 by his outstanding and enthralling performance in the men’s Singles final. Although Djokovic was favorite for his brilliant performance in the recent past where he secured Australian Open 2011 and enjoyed his successful emerging rivalry with Rafael Nadal, but still the votes seemed more favorable for the greatest tennis player Roger Federer and Clay King, Rafael Nadal. Novak Djokovic however played his best tennis in the final of Wimbledon 2011 where he took the first two sets by completely manhandling Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-1. Nadal made a come back in the 3rd set but was overtaken by Djokovic again in the 4th set hence losing it to Djokovic 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

This was Djokovic’s first Wimbledon title. Djokovic has won 48 of 49 matches this season. And he’s now won five straight over Nadal. It is almost impossible to see Djo slowing down this year as Wimbledon is his 8th tennis title of the year. He is now the ATP No. 1 ranked player surpassing Rafael Nadal. It seems like Djokovic is going to have a long successful career as he has won 3 Grand Slam titles of the year 2011 and won the Australian Open 2012 as well.

He surely is the best. No joke 😉

Famous female tennis player: Li Na

Li Na, Famous female tennis player Li Na

She was the runner-up in the women’s singles in Australian Open. Her current WTA ranking is No. 6 which is also her career high ranking. Li Na has won 19 ITF and 4 WTA singles titles. In doubles tournament, Li Na has been pretty successful and claimed 16 ITF and two WTA doubles titles. Initially, Li Na partnered with Li Ting in the doubles but recently she has been forming temporary partnerships in women’s doubles game with players like Nicole Pratt, Jelena Kankovic, Yan Zi and Peng Shuai who are her healthy rivals as well.

Li Na is famous for her brilliant game that includes athleticism and quick reflexes all over the court with ground strokes. She has the talent of spreading these ground strokes unpredictably which makes her a dangerous opponent. She is not only comfortable at baseline but also around the net. Of her two ground strokes, her backhand is very strong. The only weakness Li Na has is high number of unforced errors. However with her weaknesses, Li Na was able to make it to the French Open final where she played against Maria Sharapova. She played convincingly and on the French Open title, her first career grand slam becoming the only Chinese player (male/female) to have won any grand slam in the history of tennis. Right after her win, Li Na also wrote a book over her success and achievements.
