Margaret Court Smith was a famous tennis star who won a handful of Grand Slams during her career. Although she won 24 titles in total, only 11 are considered by most since 13 of them were won before the Open Era.

It was Australian Championship  of 1960 that the world saw a fantastic female player. She won the title that year and then never looked back after that. Within next two years, she had won 3 major tournaments. She couldn’t win Wimbledon that year but she became the first Australian woman to win the prestigious tournament in singles in 1963. She was a success, continuing with her victories in the coming years. She won 3 out of 4 major tournaments in 1965 again. She also won all the four Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles.

She kept putting in hard work and maintained her win record for years to come. In 1969, she didn’t miss anything as she won all the major titles of the year. She grabbed all the four Grand Slam titles the next year to earn the prestigious ‘boxed set’ title.

She won 62 Grand Slam titles in her career, including 19 mixed doubles, 19 doubles and 24 singles titles. She retired in 1975. Her last match was against Martina Navratilova in the US Open, which she lost. It was a quarterfinal.

Even today, Margaret Court Smith is the only player to have won all the major titles in a calendar year, including mixed doubles and singles. She remained World No.1 for most part of her career. She is remembered as one of the greatest tennis stars in history of women tennis.
