Tennis fans surely know what an ace is. For those of us who do not know, an ace is when during a game, a point is scored after a player serves the ball correctly and so strongly that the opponent doesn’t even have a chance to touch it. Not all the tennis players have the potential, the art of making a point through an ace. It requires correct positioning and timing. When our favorite player hits aces during the game, he not only makes it interesting, but also a fun and treat for us to watch.
Many players have set records for aces. The top ten record holders from 1991 to June 23, 2010 have Ivo Karlović on the top with 78 aces that he scored against Radek Štepanek in a five set semifinal of the Davis Cup. He holds the second record, as well, with 55 aces against Lleyton Hewitt in a five-set first round match of the French Open. J. Johansson achieved the third spot in the aces ranking when he hit 51 aces against Andre Agassi in a 4-set match of the fourth round at the Australian Open. Again it’s Ivo Karlovic who stands fourth with 51 aces hit against Daniele Bracciali in a five-set Wimbledon match. Roger Federer is ranked fifth with 50 aces against Andy Roddick in a 5-set Wimbledon final.
The list goes on with Richard Krajicek the sixth with 49 aces against Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Gustavo Kuerton the seventh with 47 aces against Daniel Nestor, Ivo Karlovic the eighth with 46 aces against Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Goran Ivanisević the ninth with 46 aces against Magnus Norman and Mark Philippoussis is the tenth with 46 aces against Andre Agassi.
Ivanović’s record was broken last Thursday, on June 24 by John Isner and Nicolas Mahut with 112 and 103 aces respectively.

Greatest tennis player, Pete Sampras, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, first saw actress Bridgett Wilson in 1999 and soon fell in love. They had a love affair for nine months after which they finally decided to marry. The wedding took place on September 30, 2000 in Pete’s backyard. The wedding was planned by the Laurels Custom Flora and Events planners along with the bride’s sister. Eighty guests attended the wedding among which was Pete’s fellow, all star hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.
The bride’s dress was delivered a day before the wedding via Fed-Ex. It was a long V-necked silk georgette body conscious dress while the groom opted for a black tuxedo. There were two flower girls who wore white dresses designed by the same designer who made the bride’s dress.
The couple had their first dance as a husband and wife on a ballad by Diamond Rio “I Know How the River Feels.” The father and the daughter danced on the soft tunes of “I Love You Enough to Let You Go.” Music sensation Elton John gave a surprise visit and a 45 minute long performance; including the love song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” A lemon strawberry three tier cake was cut.
Pete Sampras broke a plate along with his sister Stella, which is supposed to bring good luck according to a Greek tradition. They distributed almonds, as well, to all the guests; that is considered a symbol of fertility according to a Greek tradition. After the wedding the couple went to Mexico for their honeymoon. They now are parents of two sons.

Don’t you just love it when one of your favorite tennis players ends the match, set or a game with a serve which remains untouched by the opponent? Have you got any clue what that serve is? Yes! It’s the ace which does the job so quickly and accurately. Not every player has the potential to put the ace on a right spot and score the point. Scoring aces at maximum makes it easier to avoid long games as the game points could be won without playing multiple strokes. There are many records which have been made in serving the most aces. Few are listed below:
Goran Ivanisevic, a Croatian tennis player served the record aces during a year, numbering to 1477 in the year 1996.
Ivo Karlovic broke his own aces record in a match of Davis Cup against Radek Stepanek, where he served 78 aces out of which 77 were served on 1st serve. The interesting fact is that Karlovic lost the match even after the tie-break and setting a new ace record.
Andy Roddick holds the fastest ace record when he served an ace of 155 mph (~294 km/h) in a match against Vladimir Voltchkov in Davis Cup 2004.
Sam Querrey hit the record of ten consecutive aces against James Blake in Indianapolis Tennis Championships quarterfinal.
Interesting records were hit by the players in different ways. It’s always a treat to watch a game full of aces as it sure is a different flavor of the game.
Support your player and keep a close eye on their aces. You never know who makes a record!

Mama Mia! What a match it was by a debut lad from America who is still struggling with his career. Michael Yani from America qualified for the very first time for Roland Garros and made his name glow for being the only debut to play the longest match in the history of Roland Garros. Yani, even though lost the game, made his name into the record book by playing the match for 4 hours and 56 minutes.
Yani played his match againt Lukas Lako from Solvakia. The match started on Sunday and ended on Monday when Yani lost to Lukas by 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5) along with the final set which went up to 12 to 10 games. The number of games played in this match amounted to 71, which leveled the record of most games that have been played in a single match since the launch of tie break in 1973. Previously, on three different occasions, 71 games have been played. Before the inception of tie-break, the longest match was played back in 1957 with 83 games in one match.
This match became sensational and divine, as never before a debut has been able to play this long on the dirty surface of clay. The epic battle between the two players would always be a thing to remember in the history of Roland Garros. Yani is definitely going to rock the tennis world with his passionate and fighting spirit till the last moment. As for the longest tennis match ever, Mahut and Isner are the names who managed to play their match for 11 hours and 5 minutes over the three days battle.

To start with, the best of the best-undisputed king of the tennis world, Pete Sampras, holds seven Wimbledon singles titles in his bag of trophies. He remained the King of Wimbledon in the 90s as he remained the titleholder from1993 to 1995. 1996 was the year when Richard Krajicek became the Wimbledon Champion by beating MaliVai Washington, whereas Sampras lost to him in the quarterfinal. Pete Sampras again carried on his victorious journey by winning four consecutive Wimbledon trophies from 1997-2000.
Next to follow is the tennis legend Bjorn Borg who won this esteemed trophy for five consecutive years. He remained champion from 1976 to 1980. He would have won Wimbledon in 1981, but lost to John McEnroe and remained runner up in the contest. Despite Pete Sampras being the King of the tennis world, Bjorn is the Emperor. It is due to the fact that not only he won the five consecutive Wimbledon titles but also won the French Open doubles event three times in a row along with three consecutive successes at Wimbledon which the tennis guru’s stated as “the most difficult double in tennis.” Sampras never won any French Open titles while Federer, with his latest victory at the French Open, has become the second after Borg to hold both the titles.

The history of the French Open is full of ups and downs. Some became kings and for some there was nothing. Looking at the record book of the French Open, Bjorn Borg with six single titles and Henri Cochet with four hold the top two slots. Rafael Nadal stands by them as he has broken equalled the record of Bjorn with 6 titles. Nadal has already bagged 6 consecutive French Open titles and is eyeing for a 7th one. Again, most consecutive titles are held by Bjorn Borg, which is now shared by Rafael Nadal. At the Roland Garros, Henri Cochet has won the most titles in all events where he has won four singles, three doubles and two mixed.
The most Open Era match-winning player was Guillermo Vilas with stats of 56-17 followed by Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi registering corresponding figures of 53-12 and 51-15. The double title ace goes to Roy Emerson as he has won six double titles in the French Open. The youngest tennis champion at the Roland Garros was Michael Chang, who won the trophy in 1989 at the age of 17 years and 3 months; Mats Wilander is the next champion to follow who at the age of 17 years and 9 months created history in 1982. The French Open women’s title has never been a piece of cake. Amongst all the big names, Chris Evert was the one who grabbed the most single titles at the French Open and she did it seven times. Next in the row was the evergreen Steffi Graf who won the singles title six times. Steffi Graf is the only women player who has the best winning ratio at the clay courts. She played 94 matches of which she won 84 and lost just 10 of them.
Henin, Wills-Moody, Sperling and Seles share the most consecutive singles titles; they all won three in a row.
The aggregate title holding record goes to Smith-Court with 13 titles of which five were singles, four were doubles and four were mixed doubles. How can one forget the Queen of the tennis world, Martina Navratilova, who won seven titles in doubles events? Though she single-handedly took only two singles titles and two mixed doubles at the French Open, she managed to keep her name in the list of record holders at the Roland Garros.
The youngest champion at the French Open was Monica Seles as she won the title at the age of 16 years. She is the youngest amongst all champions whether men or women of the French Open. USA has won the most French Open titles, the country has grabbed it 27 times followed by Germans who took it to their soil 10 times.
Best Female Players in French Open

Perhaps the only female tennis player who encapsulated the mind’s eye of fans across the globe with her unprecedented aggressive style and intent to conquer all the trophies that come in her way is none other than Martina Navratilova. Her exceptional resilience led her to the indomitable heights not only on the grass courts of Wimbledon but also at the Roland Garros. Though playing on clay courts was never preferred by her, she made such, records especially in the doubles event, which are still unbreakable. In contrast, her archrival Chrissie Evert was the Queen of clay courts, holding the best record at the French Open with seven singles trophies on her rack. Though Navratilova did beat Evert three times on clay, one of which was French Open, Evert remained the ace and still holds the record of most singles titles won by any female at Roland Garros.
The sweet chubby Steffi Graf, who won 22 Grand Slams in her career, holds six French Open women title trophies (second to Evert) under her belt. She is the player of Navratilova’s list of great players. She was a blend of skill and stamina and the only tennis player who did equally well on grass as well as clay courts. Her main weapon was her accurate serves. Though clay courts never help those with great serves, she easily adjusted herself to the surface of Roland Garros and won many titles where men like Pete Sampras and Federer never did.
